There’s nothing quite like the vibe of living by the sea. And the Mediterranean is probably the best sea of them all. Just seven steps from the front door and into the water… When you’re finished swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, or fishing, come back to the cave house and refresh yourself at the outside shower. Enjoy lunch alfresco, or at the indoor dining table. Enjoy a cool beverage (or two) while enjoying the views as the world goes by.
Facing south (the best position on Santorini to avoid the prevailing northerly wind), the bay is a haven for small boats (and the occasional mega-yacht). It’s a perfect spot to watch the sunrise, and enjoy the colors of sunset. All from the comfort of your front balcony. This bay was chosen by the pre-historic civilisation that settled here, as their favoured location for a port and town. You can visit the famous ruins, just a five minute walk away. The ruins are considered one of the most important excavations in all of Greece The photos on this page were all taken from the cave. This place is a true wonderland of changing colors and light.
As you step up into the house, probably the first thing you will notice is how light and airy it is. When you think of a cave, unless you come from Santorini, you may think of a dark hole. Not so! This cave is cleverly designed to make the most of the light, and has a host of design features that make it both fun and beautiful. Think ‘Cycladic architecture meets French chic’ and you will get the idea. Once inside, on your right is the kitchen. Surfaces are custom designed with composite granite tops, and a built-in sink and Grohe faucet. All the door handles are driftwood – every one different. There is an AEG oven, a Bosch refrigerator, and an Indesit dishwasher. And a very quiet, fancy and sleek range hood.
The kitchen is designed to be functional and convenient, while enjoying the most spectacular views! Make your meal, pass it out the window, and dine at the large cement outdoor table that seats 8. Or dine at the bar-height indoor area for 6. This is a favourite hang-out for drinks, and hours of conversation.
As you can see from the photos, the view is spectacular. And yes, it really is that good! And it changes constantly as the day passes by. It’s a fabulous place to be. Don’t feel like cooking? No worries – there are 7 restaurants and a cafe within walking distance. Several of them will deliver your food plated, to the outdoor table!
It’s all about the curves! Starting life as a boat-house for local fisherman, it was then converted into a holiday home by the previous owners. The current owners then totally renovated it to their own high standards. The plumbing and electrics have all been re-done, there’s a new humidity-sensing extraction system throughout, so the cave stays dry all year – cool in summer and warm in winter. It’s interior is designed in perfect harmony with the cave. Even the paint on the walls is organic and eco-friendly. In the lounge there’s space to relax. It’s set up to watch TV, listen to music, or chill out (there’s a/c should you want to chill more). It’s designed to accommodate a projector or large TV, and there is cabling for a surround-sound stereo built in. All the electronics can be discretely hidden behind custom panels and screens, to keep the light white airy theme. There’s a variety of lighting options, from chandeliers to spotlighting, so you can set the mood accordingly…
THE MASTER BEDROOM
The first thing we should mention, is that the bed in the photos is huge! It’s so big it makes the room look small. (The bed is 7ft x 7ft. It’s a foot wider than a california king). But don’t worry – it’s not staying. The owners will be taking it as it has their initials carved into it. That aside, the master bedroom is upstairs above the lounge. It has commanding views of the sea, with it’s own private balcony, and an ensuite with shower and w/c. It’s finished with wooden floors, soft colors, and a chandelier for that extra romance. Speaking of romance, there’s a fireplace (for aesthetic value only). It also comes with a full wall of storage, and space for a 40” TV. Go to sleep listening to the soft lapping of the waves. (or close the windows, and put on the a/c if you prefer).
Step outside onto the private balcony, and you will see it’s a wonderful place to relax, read a book, work on your tan – it’s nice and private. It’s also perfect for your morning tea or coffee, your afternoon cocktails, or meals.
THE MEZZANINE BEDROOM
The mezzanine bedroom is a unique space – you really know you are in a cave in here! It has a seating area, with a custom makeup area. It has a double bed (or two singles), and an ensuite w/c. There’s custom features using driftwood and recycled furniture, to give the space it’s own character. It’s funky and fun, with wide wooden floors, and a wonderful place to be. It’s second-level cave living!
The third bedroom is called the Boatroom. It has a big cycladic (curved) window so you can see through the lounge to the sea. It has a single bed, which can convert into a double. There’s a small table, and driftwood clothes hangar. Opposite the room is storage for extra clothing etc. Alternatively, it would make a great office space, den, or library. On the right here you can see a photo of the hallway to the main bathroom. The entrance to the boatroom is on the right. Prior to that is a storage cupboard.
The main bathroom is on the ground level. There is a large walk-in custom-made shower, over a bath. There’s even a space to highlight some art. It’s a spacious and open room. If you leave the bathroom door open – you can even see the sea while showering! The shower is thermostatically controlled. There’s a heated towel rail to keep your towels soft and dry. The w/c is in a separate room within the bathroom. The washing machine is cleverly hidden behind the w/c door. There are two 150 year old marble basins in this bathroom. There are touch-sensor light makeup mirrors, in the bathroom and w/c
As you can see – the house is waterfront – there are no cars driving by – a rarity on Santorini. Many other beaches have a road in front.. You just walk seven steps, and you’re on the sand. While it’s a public walkway out front, as the ground floor patio is on a paper road, some people will walk past. Most are going kayaking at the kayak tour place along the beach. A few are on their way to red beach. It all adds to the holiday atmosphere. If you like people watching – sit outside downstairs. If not, stay indoors and watch the view (the window heights are designed so you can see the view, yet people cannot see in), or sit on the private balcony upstairs. There’s a real holiday vibe to the place! It is very rare to have beach-front property on Santorini (half of the island sits 300 metres (1000 feet) above sea level). And the likelihood of new waterfront properties coming on the market are unlikely due to changes in property building regulations. The house has been painted in keeping with the colors of the surrounding cliffs, so as to blend in as naturally as possible. Situated 5 feet above sea level (high tide is around 0.6 feet). There is one restaurant next to the house, run by a super friendly father and daughter, who keep quite short hours – normally 10.30am – 6pm (occasionally later if they feel like it). They make the best courgette fritters! Highly recommended.
